I’m a traveler with roots.

Hi – I’m Darby. I’m rooted into my community – my husband and I have two active middle-school age kids, two cats, a house, and careers – so I’m not here to tell you to sell everything, quit your job, and travel indefinitely. That’s someone else’s story.

Mine is about making the most of the time you do have.

I’ve been traveling since I was 20.  I came away from a voyage on Semester at Sea in 1997 wanting to experience the whole world.  And by the end of that voyage, I was fearless – confident I could navigate through pretty much any country in the world.  From a months-long backpacking trip through Europe in my early 20s to more comfortable shorter independent trips since then – through New Zealand, Asia, South America, and Africa, and countless city visits and road trips throughout the U.S. and Canada. I’ve spent years piecing together itineraries across 38 countries and counting.

Somewhere along the way, I became the person friends ask when they need help figuring out where to go, when to go, what to book, and how to make a trip actually happen.  That’s what Remarkable Route is here for. I help thoughtful travelers plan better trips with less overwhelm – especially people with limited vacation time, families trying to coordinate schedules, and friends who keep saying, “We should all go somewhere,” but never quite get the trip on the calendar.

I believe the best trips are built around connection: to a place, to the people who live there, and to the people you’re traveling with.  A local guide, a food tour, a walking tour, a conversation with someone who knows the place well – those are often the moments that turn a good trip into a remarkable one.

I believe in good value.  Not cheap at all costs.  Not luxury for the sake of luxury.  Just smart choices: shoulder-season timing, the right neighborhood, the right tour company, the right planning tools, and enough structure that you spend less time second-guessing and more time enjoying where you are.

And I believe in booking the trip while you can.  Life changes.  Health changes.  People we love are not always here as long as we expect them to be.  If you have the means, the health, and the window of time, I hope this site helps you stop waiting for the perfect moment and start planning something worth remembering.

Remarkable Route is for people who want meaningful travel without planning chaos. Let’s make the trip happen!
